75 years of island inflation. Jersey and Guernsey go back to 1950. IoM starts 1977 — the island's General Index of Retail Prices was only formally published from that year. All three islands tracked UK inflation broadly through the 1970s oil shocks, then diverged increasingly from the 1990s as their financial sectors created different local price dynamics. The 2022–23 spike was universal — but IoM peaked a year later due to the way its CPI is calculated (financial year averages).

The full record shows the IoM premium has been a persistent feature since records began — the island typically ran 1–2pp above UK through the 1970s–80s, converged in the low-inflation 1990s and 2000s, and diverged again sharply in 2022–23. UK benchmark: RPI monthly annual rate (ONS CZBH, Jan 1987=100) January 1977–December 2008 — like-for-like vs IoM RPI. CPI monthly annual rate (ONS D7G7, 2015=100) January 2009 onwards — both series switch to CPI at this point.
Series breaks: Jan 2009: IoM RPI→CPI (Carli→Jevons formula); UK benchmark RPI→CPI. The differential is internally consistent within each period but the methodology shift should be noted when comparing across the break.

Island minus UK: Above zero means the island was inflating faster than the UK that year. Below zero means cheaper. Jersey and Guernsey data runs from 1950 — you can see how the Channel Islands tracked the UK closely through the 1950s–70s, then progressively diverged as their economies developed differently. IoM data starts 1977.
Benchmark: UK RPI (Dec annual %) used as benchmark for all years pre-2009. UK CPIH (Dec annual %) used for 2009+ comparisons. This switch is necessary because CPIH is the ONS preferred modern measure but doesn't exist as a clean series pre-2009. Jersey and Guernsey RPI includes mortgage interest payments; UK benchmarks do not — the comparison is directionally valid but not methodology-identical. IoM RPI (pre-2009) is the closest like-for-like to UK RPI.

Methodology note: Jersey and Guernsey housing groups include mortgage interest payments (MIP) — they move with BoE base rate changes. IoM Group 04 and UK Division 04 exclude MIP. The 2022–23 housing spikes in Jersey (+24pp) and Guernsey (+12pp) are primarily mortgage rate effects, not structural housing costs. The ex-housing comparison is the methodologically cleaner signal.
What's driving the island premium? The two charts show separately: how island housing costs have diverged from UK housing costs, and how island prices (excluding housing) have diverged from UK prices excluding housing. The ex-housing differential is the most stable signal of the persistent island cost-of-living premium — driven by import costs, transport, and smaller markets.
Method: Housing differential = island housing rate − UK CPI Div04 rate (ONS D7GB). Ex-housing differential = island ex-housing rate − UK ex-Div04 rate. Island ex-housing derived as: (all_items − w×h) / (1−w) where w = housing group weight. UK ex-Div04 derived identically using ONS annual weights (CHZU). IoM weight: 154.9/1000 (2008 basket, fixed). Jersey weights: 238–252/1000 (basket reviews). Guernsey weights: 228–235/1000 (basket reviews). Two separate Y-axes — housing swings ±25pp, ex-housing ±5pp; shared axis would crush the ex-housing signal.

Pre-1989 UK data: RPI only; CPIH is not available pre-2005 as an official series (ONS has published retrospective estimates to 1988 but these are not used here).
